Neighborhood Overview

Nestled in the northwest section of the Phoenix metropolitan area, family-friendly Peoria is an ideal community for those looking for close-by access to entertainment and recreational activities. The city is home to the Arizona Broadway Theatre, the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts and the newly rebranded P83 Entertainment District, offering residents easy access to a wide variety of entertainment. For sports fans, the Peoria Sports Complex is the spring training home of Major League Baseball's Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres. Originally inhabited by farmers from Illinois seeking a warmer climate and agricultural success, Peoria is now home to 160,000 residents.

Lifestyle & Amenities

Peoria offers a variety of amenities for families. The Peoria Unified School District operates 40 schools, meaning there is probably a neighborhood school within walking distance -- or at most a short bus ride -- from your home. Love going out for a night on the town or chilling out with friends and loved ones? Peoria offers a plethora of activities, no matter your mood. From high-entertainment musicals at the Arizona Broadway Theatre to the multitude of restaurants and shops in the P83 Entertainment District to beautiful parks and golf courses that flaunt lush desert landscapes, Peoria is the perfect place to live, work and play.

School Report Card

From a public school perspective, Peoria's schools are primarily part of the Peoria Unified School District (PUSD), an entity that has served the Northwest Valley for more than 125 years. PUSD currently operates 33 K-8 schools and seven high schools, with 14 schools rating "7" or higher on the education ranker GreatSchools.org. Peoria also enjoys a wide selection of charter and private schools.

Shopping

Peoria is anchored by two major shopping centers -- Arrowhead Towne Center and Park West -- both of which are in Glendale on the perimeters of Peoria. Arrowhead Towne Center, located on Bell Road between 75th and 83rd Avenues, offers two floors of shopping with a full food court. An outdoor amphitheater plus a 14-screen AMC Theatre round out the amenities. Park West, located at the corner of 99th Avenue and Northern Avenue, offers numerous restaurants including BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse, Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Grimaldi's Coal Brick-Oven Pizzeria and more. A wide variety of retail stores at Park West are flanked by shaded lounges and fireplaces.

Transportation

Peoria offers drivers, cyclists and pedestrians a myriad of ways to navigate the city. The Loop 101, situated around the eastern and northern perimeter of Peoria, provides easy access to the P83 Entertainment District, the Peoria Sports Complex and University of Phoenix Stadium (home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals) in neighboring Glendale. In addition, Valley Metro operates several bus routes throughout the city.

Demographics

The median resident age for Peoria is 38.2 years, slightly higher than the median age for Arizona which is 36.0 years. Women make up 51.5 percent of Peoria residents, with 48.5 percent of residents being male. The median household income for Peoria is $61,880 compared to the Arizona average of $47,836. The median house or condo value in Peoria is $162,900.

Employment

According to Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat, Peoria has recently developed a new economic development initiative strategy. Aimed at targeting new industries to help diversify the city's workforce, the strategy has already helped to attract attention from national and international companies. Companies that have been targeted include Trine University, Maxwell Technology and BioInspire, with the focus on bringing educated and skilled jobs to Peoria.

Recreation

Peoria is a great place to get involved with all kinds of recreational activities. In particular, the spring and fall months present a wonderful opportunity to get outside and get moving -- and Peoria's abundance of hiking trails make it very easy to enjoy the beautiful weather. During the summer, Peoria operates three city pools and offers classes for all ages and skill levels. The Peoria Sports Complex hosts the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres during Major League Baseball's spring training season, while Peoria's Rio Vista Recreation Center -- which boasts a fitness center, basketball court, rock climbing wall and much more -- offers numerous classes for both kids and adults.

Healthcare

Peoria residents have easy access to many different healthcare providers. Banner Boswell Medical Center, located directly west of Peoria in neighboring Sun City, is a 501-bed campus that provides patients with a myriad of health specialists. The Heart Center at Banner Boswell has received national recognition, while Boswell's neuroscience department specializes in a wide variety of neurological conditions and diseases. To the east of Peoria in Glendale, Banner Thunderbird Medical Center is ranked one of the top hospitals in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Numerous medical practices in and around Peoria provide comprehensive primary care treatment.
