Transportation

There are several ways to get around Surprise and neighboring areas. For example, Valley Metro operates bus service within metropolitan Phoenix and has routes that go through Surprise, while Dial-A-Ride service is also available to residents of Surprise. Grand Avenue, the name for U.S. Highway 60 between Wickenburg and downtown Phoenix, runs along the northeast border of Surprise and provides easy access to Peoria, Glendale and Phoenix. The Loop 303 freeway traverses Surprise and takes motorists north to Interstate 17 or south to Interstate 10.


Demographics

In 2013, Surprise's population was 123,546. Since 2000, the population of Surprise has increased threefold-plus. The median resident age in Surprise is 36 years, the same as Arizona's median age. The median household income in Surprise is $59,553, higher than the state's median of $47,826. Compared to Arizona's median property value of $151,500, Surprise's median property value is slightly higher at $160,400.


Employment

Surprise is a member of the Surprise Regional Chamber of Commerce, which also includes El Mirage, Sun City, Sun City West and Youngtown. According to Surprise Mayor Sharon Wolcott, IRIS USA, a consumer products manufacturer, will open a new office in Surprise and is expected to bring 100 jobs to the city, while healthcare company MD24 is expected to grow to 200 employees by the end of 2015. In addition, the city offers a "jobs" page on its website, listing a number of available jobs in and around Surprise.


Recreation

Surprise Stadium, spring training home for Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals, has been rated the "best place to watch a spring training game" by Best of Phoenix. Along with numerous other events, the stadium is also home to family movie nights and a well-attended Fourth of July fireworks show. Surprise residents also enjoy White Tank Mountain Regional Park, the largest regional park in Maricopa County. Covering almost 30,000 acres, the park offers the perfect landscape for hiking, camping and more. For those who prefer indoor recreation, Surprise is home to venues such as Uptown Alley Bowling and a Carmike Digiplex movie theater.

Water Sports

Surprise is also conveniently close to Lake Pleasant, located just 20 minutes away. Lake Pleasant covers 10,000 square feet and is Arizona's second largest lake. Camping, boating, swimming, fishing and water sports are at your fingertips.

Webb Medical Center in right-next-door Sun City West. and just 15 minutes away. Banner Del Webb is a 375-bed center offering a myriad of medical services including imaging, surgery, heart care, cancer care and a full emergency department. Other nearby facilities include Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, just a few short miles away from Surprise.
