Neighborhood Overview

Scottsdale is one of Arizona’s ten largest cities and is loosely divided into four distinctive areas: North Scottsdale; South Scottsdale (McKellips Road north to Thomas Road); Old Town/Downtown Scottsdale; and Central Scottsdale (also known as the “Shea Corridor”), extending from Camelback Road north to Shea Boulevard. Specifically, North Scottsdale is home to a wealth of the most luxurious homes and estates in Arizona, with residents of North Scottsdale enjoying plenty of open space as well as magnificent mountain and desert views. The Scottsdale Airpark, one of the largest employment centers in the Greater Phoenix area, anchors this portion of the community and is home to over 55,000 employees and 2,600 companies.

School Report Card

While some students in North Scottsdale attend private schools, from a public school perspective, many of the area’s students attend schools in the Cave Creek Unified School District, which covers five square-miles encompassing parts of North Scottsdale as well as sections of North Phoenix, Cave Creek, Carefree and other areas. The district serves approximately 5,500 students and has five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. It has the highest percentage of National Board Certified teachers in the state and a high school graduation rate of 94 percent.

Other public school students in North Scottsdale might attend a school in the Scottsdale Unified School District, a top-performing public school district with 31 schools including many that are rated as ‘Excelling’, the state’s highest rating. The district serves more than 25,000 students, covers 112 square-miles and offers five comprehensive high schools, one online high school, six middle schools, three K-8 schools, 16 elementary schools and three early-childhood campuses. In addition, Scottsdale is home to approximately 40 private schools as well as a number of charter schools. As with any student in Arizona, families can participate in open enrollment and explore other public schooling options in other cities in the state.

Several higher education institutions are located in or near Scottsdale, a sampling of which includes Arizona State University’s main campus in neighboring Tempe; SkySong The ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center (located in South Scottsdale), which is a dynamic center for innovation, technology and economic expansion; and Scottsdale Community College (also in South Scottsdale), which is part of the Maricopa Community College system.


Shopping

Kierland Commons, an outdoor shopping mall located on the North Scottsdale/Phoenix border, is a lifestyle center blending retail, entertainment and dining. Along with restaurants and bars, a small sampling of high-end specialty stores at Kierland Commons includes Anthropologie, Banana Republic and Chico’s. For more extensive shopping experiences, most residents will travel to Downtown Scottsdale, home to Scottsdale Fashion Square and its plethora of luxury stores such as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Jimmy Choo. Scottsdale Fashion Square is also home to Arizona’s first and only Barneys New York location. Also located in Downtown Scottsdale are dozens of art galleries, boutiques and shops, many of which are notable for their offerings of unique jewelry, pots, rugs and more handcrafted by Native American artisans.


Transportation

A personal vehicle is all but required to live in North Scottsdale, but as you travel closer into Central, Old Town and South Scottsdale, you’ll find that the city supports a free trolley system. From an air-travel perspective, North Scottsdale is home to Scottsdale Airport, one of the busiest single runway facilities in the nation. In addition, Sky Harbor International Airport — one of the ten busiest airports in the U.S. — is just a freeway’s drive away in Phoenix, with most employment corridors in Scottsdale located 20 minutes or less from Sky Harbor.


Demographics

Overall, Scottsdale’s median age is 44, with 52.7 percent of residents categorized as having attained a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 26.6 percent of Arizona residents and 28.5 percent nationally. From a macro perspective, the average household income in Scottsdale is a shade more than $96,000, while the median household income is slightly more than $76,000. This compares to the Arizona median household income of approximately $50,000. The city covers an area of 184.5 square-miles and enjoys a median home value of $261,652. Twenty-one percent of Arizona’s corporate headquarters are located in Scottsdale.


Employment

The Scottsdale Airpark, one of the largest employment centers in the Greater Phoenix area, anchors the North Scottsdale section of Scottsdale and is home to more than 55,000 employees and some 2,600 companies. Firms such as Vanguard, Orion Health, Accolade, QuickenLoans, GE Capital, DHL, Discount Tire Company, Fidelity Investments, JDA Software and GoDaddy.com are headquartered or have regional headquarters in the area.

From an “overall Scottsdale” perspective, a sampling of additional major employers in the city includes HonorHealth, CVS-CareMark, General Dynamics, McKesson and Mayo Clinic.

Recreation

The City of Scottsdale hosts a number of world-famous, celebrity-studded events such as the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, the PGA’s Waste Management Phoenix Open and Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, all of which are open to the public. In addition, the city boasts gorgeous public parks and a wealth of biking and hiking trails in and around the magnificent McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Golf is also a “biggie” in North Scottsdale, as is pretty much anything on the outdoor menu thanks to a weather forecast that includes well over 300 days of sunshine each year.


Healthcare

HonorHealth has hospital facilities in three Scottsdale locations and is the City of Scottsdale’s largest employer. HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center is located in North Scottsdale; HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center, which is also home to the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center, is located in Central Scottsdale; and HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center is located in South Scottsdale. Meanwhile, located near the Scottsdale border is a campus of the Mayo Clinic, home to a transplant center and much more.
