Located ten miles west of downtown Phoenix, Tolleson is a family-friendly city that is characterized by a small-town vibe while still providing access to all the amenities of a large city like Phoenix. Founded in 1912 by Walter G. and Alethea H. Tolleson, the town originally was centered around the "Ten Mile Store," which served as the first stagecoach stop along the route to Yuma. Nowadays, Tolleson serves as a key distribution hub for numerous manufacturing companies.

School Report Card

Public school students in Tolleson are served by the Tolleson Elementary School District and the Tolleson Unified High School District. The Tolleson Elementary School District operates four elementary schools, two of which are in Tolleson while the other two are in Phoenix. The Tolleson Unified High School District is home to five traditional high schools as well as a college preparatory campus. Tolleson is also home to the Arts Academy at Estrella Mountain, a private school providing an emphasis on the arts.


Shopping

Tolleson's main shopping center is Desert Sky Mall, located just northeast of Tolleson in West Phoenix. Anchored by major retailers such as Dillard's and Sears among others -- and featuring over 100 shops and eating locations -- Desert Sky Mall offers a convenient shopping experience for Tolleson residents. Just ten minutes north of Tolleson is Westgate Entertainment District in Glendale which boasts over 35 shops and restaurants and features the WaterDance Plaza, modeled after the world-famous fountain at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.


Transportation

Tolleson is served by Valley Metro, which provides bus service throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area. In addition, the Avondale ZOOM busses travel through Avondale and the surrounding areas, including Tolleson, and one-way fares currently cost only 50 cents. I-10 passes through Tolleson and provides quick access to downtown Phoenix, including Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.


Demographics

In 2013, Tolleson's population was 6,756 with the median resident age coming in at 26.6 years compared to Arizona's median age of 33.8 years. The median household income in Tolleson in 2012 was $35,910, lower than the state's median of $47,826, while the median house or condo value in 2012 was $89,759 which was lower than Arizona's median of $151,500.


Employment

Tolleson hosts over 20 Fortune 500 companies employing more than 20,000 people. According to Tolleson's 2013 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the largest employers in the city include JBS Packerland, Americold, PepsiCo, Fry's Food and Drug, SRP and Quiktrip among others. The principal industries for the city are distribution, food, fiber and natural products, and manufacturing. 


Recreation

Tolleson residents have access to an array of recreational activities including two city parks and a public pool. For sports fans, nearby Glendale is home to Camelback Ranch, spring training headquarters for Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox. Other nearby spring training fields include Goodyear Ballpark and Maryvale Baseball Park. Meanwhile, neighboring Avondale is home to a Brunswick bowling alley and a Harkins movie theater.


Healthcare

The nearest hospital to Tolleson is probably West Valley Hospital (operated by Abrazo Health) in neighboring Goodyear. The 188-bed hospital recently opened a Level 1 Trauma Center and offers advanced surgical technology, orthopedics, cardiovascular care and women's diagnostic services. Also nearby is Banner Estrella Medical Center (in West Phoenix) whose services include a bariatric center, cancer care, heart care, maternity services and more.
