Over the decades, Buckeye has grown from a sleepy center of rural commerce to a thriving suburban city that proudly retains its hometown feel. Along with gorgeous golf courses, Buckeye is home to rapidly growing residential development, including Verrado, a multi-age master-planned community developed by DMB Associates.

Rich in natural hiking resources, Buckeye boasts a wealth of beautiful Sonoran desert acreage including the stunning White Tank Mountains, Robbins Butte Wildlife Area, Buckeye Hills Regional Park and much more. As with many cities in the Valley, Buckeye owes its heritage to farming and water; indeed, in 1885, residents laid out the first canal, naming it the Buckeye Canal in honor of one of the founders’ native state of Ohio.

School Report Card

School-aged residents of Buckeye are serviced by the Buckeye Union High School District, the Agua Fria Union High School District, the Buckeye Elementary School District, the Liberty Elementary School District, the Palo Verde Elementary School District and Saddle Mountain Unified School District.


There are several shopping venues in Buckeye, including Sundance Town Center which is located on the corner of Watson and Yuma. Included in this area are a Lowes, PetSmart, Wal-Mart Super Center and numerous other retail shops and restaurants. In addition, Main Street at Verrado offers a unique shopping experience with a number of small businesses adding to the community's small-town feel.


Several smaller highways, as well as the I-10 freeway, intersect with Buckeye making commuting into Phoenix and/or traveling out-of-state easy and convenient. In addition to its proximity to freeways, Buckeye is home to the Buckeye Municipal Airport (currently equipped with a 5,500-foot runway that can accommodate corporate aircraft as well as small general aviation aircraft) plus Phoenix Goodyear airport is not far away. For longer trips, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is just a freeway's drive away. 


Buckeye's population in 2013 was approximately 57,000, which is a population change since the year 2000 of over 750 percent. The median age is almost 31, with the Arizona median being almost 34. The estimated median household income in 2012 was $60,778, with the Arizona median household income being $47,826.

Boasting plenty of open space, Buckeye encompasses some 660 square-miles. When it comes to housing, the estimated median house or condo value in 2012 was $124,263; it was $73,300 in 2000.


Buckeye features numerous small businesses as well as quite a number of large enterprises. A sampling of some of the largest private employers includes Canam Steel Corp, Wal-Mart Distribution Center, Golden Eagle Distributors, Inc., Arizona Public Service (APS) and Palo Verde Nuclear Generation Station.

Meanwhile, some of the largest public employers in Buckeye include the City of Buckeye, Buckeye Union High School District, Buckeye Elementary School District, the Arizona Department of Corrections and Liberty Elementary School District.


Residents of Buckeye tend to love the great outdoors since the area is blessed with such an abundance of natural recreational opportunities. Indeed, hikers, bikers and nature-lovers of all abilities and interests regularly savor the majesties of Mother Nature that exist in White Tank Mountain Regional Park and Buckeye Hills. Robbins Butte, home to a variety of avian species, attracts bird-watchers throughout the year. 

In addition, Buckeye Town Park is home to an Olympic-sized swimming pool complete with a 35-foot-high water slide and other water features. Golf-lovers will delight in the area's scenery-rich courses, while the more adventurous can experience the thrill of skydiving at Desert Sky Diving, located at Buckeye Municipal Airport.


West Valley Emergency Center, part of Abrazo Health, is located in Buckeye. The Center offers a 24/7 acute-care emergency department plus comprehensive diagnostic imaging, CT scans, ultrasound services and a full-service laboratory. In addition, Buckeye is the home base of an air ambulance helicopter, fully equipped to move seriously ill patients to hospitals in Phoenix.
